This made me smile all the way through. The pelicans, the whale, the ridiculous Hearst statues, the family chat… it reads like one of those trips where nothing huge happens, and somehow everything matters. This is one of my favoritest drives. We did it in 2019 and 2022.
The coast road trip was our summer standard. My dad would load up the wood paneled station wagon and do some variant of this from LA heading north, hugging the beaches. Once we made it all the way to Canada.

I haven’t been back to Hearst since 2019
